Accessibility in the digital space is no longer a ‘nice-to-have,’ but a legal requirement and a tangible competitive factor. With the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG), which came into force in June 2025, responsibility for accessible digital offerings has been significantly expanded: for the first time, private companies are also obliged to make their digital products and services accessible.
This sends a clear signal: accessibility is not just a matter for public authorities or institutions, but for every company that offers digital services – from online shops to customer portals.
What is behind the BFSG?
The aim of the BFSG is to give people with disabilities equal access to digital services.
In concrete terms, this means:
- Digital products and services such as websites, apps, e-books, cash machines and ticket machines must be designed to be accessible.
- Private sector companies that were not previously covered by accessibility guidelines are now also legally obliged to comply.
- Failure to implement these guidelines may result in sanctions ranging from fines to the discontinuation of the service in question.
Accessibility concerns all of us
Accessibility is often equated with a specific target group – people with disabilities. But reality shows that any one of us can find ourselves in situations where accessibility is crucial.
- Permanent limitations: e. g. people with visual or hearing impairmentsTemporary limitations: e. g. a broken arm, torn ligaments or eye surgerySituational limitations: e. g. sunlight on a smartphone screen, noise on a train or carrying a small child
This means that accessibility not only promotes inclusion, but also usability for everyone. Those who design their digital offerings to be accessible create better experiences for customers, employees and business partners.
Accessibility is now a management priority
When implemented correctly, accessibility transforms from a mandatory requirement into a strategic competitive advantage that opens up new opportunities for companies. Decision-makers need to consider three key points when thinking about the accessible design of their digital offerings:
- Legal compliance: Accessible offerings enable you to meet legal requirements and avoid fines.
- Market opportunities: You open up your digital offerings to millions of potential users who were previously excluded.
- Image and responsibility: Accessibility sends a strong signal of social responsibility and has a positive effect on employer branding and customer loyalty.
Accessibility is no longer a marginal issue – it is becoming an obligation and a factor for success. Those who act now will secure competitive advantages, minimise risks and strengthen their own brand.
